Personality: Ryuunosuke is surprisingly normal for your average protagonist. He takes a more conservative stance on things and generally needs a push and shove from others to really show what kind of person he is. Much of his character development and personality will come from becoming a defense attorney. Now Ryuunosuke had no interest in being a defense attorney (He was studying English), and he was perfectly fine with Asougi taking his defense in case 1, but having heard his friend's career was on the line, he decided to defend himself. He had no prior knowledge of how the courtroom worked or how to be a defense attorney. He just wanted to do it, to protect his best friend and career. These are indications that Ryuunosuke puts others before him and likely lacks in his own self worth. There's a also a clear lack of thinking things through when he said he would defend himself without any courtroom experience. His heart may be in the right place, but it could potentially make the situation even worse.
You can imagine how nervous and absolutely out of his element he was during the trial. He basically interrupted everyone when they were reviewing the case, and his first cross-examination basically involved a lot of awkward pauses, because he had no idea what to ask or press about. At one point, he asked the witness about what kind of steak he ate and if it was good, which had nothing to do with the trial on hand. Ryuunosuke just doesn't do well when put on the spot. He gets nervous easily and his uncertainty is visibly displayed from his "swimming" eyes. They tend to dart about when he's nervous and he starts to fall all over his words and stutters. When he first met the Chief Magistrate Heart Vortex, he couldn't even bring himself to say he was to be Asougi's replacement defense attorney. He even said he was happy just standing around when Vortex apologized for keeping them. Barok also chides him for being a nervous wreck when he points out a contradiction. It would usually end up being Susato or Asougi who has to say something for him. Interestingly, he has been known to be a good public speaker. He was in a speech contest with Asougi, and Ryuunosuke had won, mostly because he was able to read one part of Asougi's speech that he himself couldn't. It was basically a tongue twister, something that Ryuunosuke personally enjoys, much to Asougi's frustration (Who even considers tongue twisters a hobby??).
Despite all of his shortcomings as a Defense Attorney, it was still his decision in the end to take up his defense and to later become Asougi's replacement. Asougi had been killed on his way to Britain, so after a little hinting from Sherlock, Ryuunosuke decided to take Asougi's place as the transfer student, and everything that would come from it. All of this clearly shows Ryuunosuke's willingness to help others, a sense of honor and that he is affected by things around him. He may not know how, and it may take him time to get to where he wants to be, but he is determined. Early on, this determination was because he wanted to uphold Asougi's mission. It was not for himself, it was for someone else. Even then, he didn't even fully understand what Asougi's mission was, and mostly went through the motion of being a Defense attorney. His very first case in Britain was all over the place. He was fighting with himself on what was the right thing to do. He was there to defend his client, but at the same time the evidence just didn't add up. He won with a not guilty verdict in the end, but it didn't feel like he had won. It felt like nothing had been answered and the verdict was preconceived. These are indication that Ryuunosuke cares strongly about fairness and discovering the truth, even if he hadn't realize it himself by this point. He even stood up for Barok, the prosecutor and rival when the Judge expressed his disappointment in him.
Ryuunosuke is also seen to be able to take a lot of scrutiny from others. While it takes years of studying to become a proficient defense attorney, Ryuunosuke only had a month. On top of that, he had to deal with the cultural differences and reception from being a foreigner. Japan was considered a small developing island at the time and he was met with prejudice in Great Britain. Outside of his friends, no one actually addressed him by his name, he was usually given racial nicknames instead (think yellow face, the Orient with black magic). Despite all of this, he remained incredibly steadfast to uphold his promise he made to Asougi. In some sense, being under pressure helps drive Ryuunosuke to keep moving forward. There's no where left to go, but up. If he wasn't satisfied with an outcome, he'll keep pressing until the truth showed itself. Twice in case 5, the jurors had voted the defendent guilty of her crimes, but Ryuunosuke wasn't going to accept the guilty verdict when he believed his client was innocent. Twice he asked for a closing argument, something that was already unheard of in the British Court. As long as it was within legal terms, however unorthodox it may seem, Ryuunosuke would use every weapon he had until everything had been exhausted (He managed to exhaust all of the prosecution's evidence in case 3). He seems to take a "the ends justify the means" approach as well. In the third case, Megundal had received the not guilty verdict, only to discover later that he had indeed been guilty all along. Megundal's case was brought up in case 5, where Ryuunosuke had to admit that Megundal had been guilty, potentially hurting his reputation and his defense. Despite this, he believed that it was necessary in order to work towards proving his defendent innocent.
It becomes clear by the end of case 4 that he had come a long way since his early days of stumbling in court. He went from following someone else to finding his own footing as a Defense Attorney. For some time, he had a lot of doubt in himself, which again plays on his lack of self worth and being just a shadow of someone else. Having actually prove his client innocent in case 4, with his own strength, did he managed to find confidence in own abilities. A Defense Attorney's worth is measured in how much they believe in their client. That means, believing in yourself. It is something Asougi once told him and it was something he had to discover for himself. That doesn't mean he still has moments of doubt, but at least at his current point he's more willing to keep trying than just give up.
Abilities:
Alignment: Peromei. Ryuunosuke has the unfortunate luck of finding himself in dire situations and having to dig himself out of that despair, as a person and as a defense attorney.
Other: Other then the clothes he has on him, he will have Asougi's katana, Karma and Susato's Case Notes for the Megundal case.
Update: When he's canon updated to DGS2, he no longer has the Megundal Case files.
He carries back several items from the court record due to being pulled in the middle of a trial.
